Simplest Steps

To import your own icons into the ePointer, the easiest way is to place the image files into the software’s user icon directory. The specific operations are as follows:

Open the User Icon Folder: Launch the ePointer software, click the software icon in the system tray at the bottom right corner, and select [Open Icon Folder] from the pop-up menu. This will open the folder where the software stores user icons.

Add Icon Files: Copy your own icon files (images in
.png
format) to the icon folder to add new icons.

Tip: There is no need to close the software when adding new icons. However, if you need to delete or replace old icon files and receive a error prompt, please close the software and try again.

Delete Icons: Delete the image files in the icon folder to remove the corresponding icons.

Tip: If a deletion error prompt appears when deleting, please close the ePointer software first.

Use Icons in the ePointer: In drawing mode, open the drop-down panel of the Icon tool, and you will see the newly installed icons.

Tip: If there are too many icons that exceed the capacity of the panel, you can move the mouse over the panel and scroll the middle mouse button to scroll the panel.

Icon Size

The size of the software’s built-in icons is 128*128 pixels. You can refer to this size to create your own icons.

Different brush sizes will affect the size of the icon drawn on the screen. The specific correspondence is as follows:

Brush Size

Drawn Icon Size

Small Brush

20% of the original size

Medium Brush

32% of the original size

Large Brush

46% of the original size

Extra-Large Brush

62% of the original size

For example, if the original size of an icon image is
128*128
pixels, the size of the icon drawn with a small brush will be
26*26
pixels, and with a medium brush it will be
41*41
pixels, and so on. If you use a larger or smaller image, the drawn icon will be correspondingly larger or smaller with different brush sizes.

Problems Solved by the ePointer Assistant

Since you only need to copy images to the specified icon directory to use them in the Screen Electronic Pointer, why do you need the ePointer Assistant?

This involves the issue of icon anchor point.

By default, the anchor point of an icon is at the top-left corner (as shown in the left image above). When drawing an icon in the ePointer, the mouse click position will align with the top-left corner of the icon. However, this may not be what we want. For example, take a checkmark: we usually want the left endpoint of the checkmark to align with the mouse position (as shown in the right image above), so that we can easily predict where the checkmark will appear on the annotated target. In such cases, we need to set the icon’s anchor point, and this is where the ePointer Assistant is needed.

How to Use the ePointer Assistant

The ePointer Assistant is used to help you set the anchor point and rotation angle of icons.

The usage steps are as follows:

Select Image File: Click the [Browse] button to open the image file to be used as an icon. Supports
.png
format and transparent backgrounds.

Set Image Name: Set the image name in the [Image Name] text box. This name will also be used as the file name of the icon, and the default is the file name of the image file.

Set Icon Anchor Point: You can directly click the mouse or press and drag the mouse in the original image display box below the Image Name to set the icon’s anchor point. You can also adjust the anchor point by modifying the [Anchor X] and [Anchor Y]. The crosshair represents the position of the anchor point. The anchor point position is where the mouse aligns when drawing.

Adjust Rotation Angle: If needed, you can also rotate the icon.

Preview Icon: The right side of the interface displays the actual drawn size and display effect of the icon with different brush sizes. The crosshair represents the position where the ePointer aligns the mouse when drawing the icon.

Set Output Directory: Set the output directory for saving the icon files.

Tip: You can directly set the output directory to the user icon folder (right-click the ePointer icon in the system tray and select [Open Icons Folder] to get the path), which can omit the subsequent icon installation steps. However, it should be noted that if you want to overwrite an existing icon, it may result in saving errors due to the original icon being in use. In this case, you need to first turn off the ePointer.

Save Icon: After clicking this button, the software will automatically copy the icon file to the output directory and generate a configuration file (a
.ini
file with the same name) for the icon.

Install Icon: Similar to the icon installation method introduced above, copy both the image file and the
.ini
file in the output directory to the user icon folder.

Brush presets let you combine commonly used brush tools, colors, dimensions, and effects, and use shortcuts to quickly switch between them, eliminating the hassle of configuring them in the toolbar.

Click the gear button in the lower right corner of the toolbar to open the Preferences - Presets screen of the software, where you can define the brush color and preset brush on the toolbar.

Toolbar color

Toolbar colors are brush colors that appear directly in the toolbar color area, and we can reset these colors as needed in our preferences.

there are some nuances in color definitions between macOS and Windows.

macOS version

customize 24 toolbar colors for macOS. The toolbar displays 12 colors (first page) by default, and the other 12 colors (second page) are displayed after holding down the option key. You can redefine these 24 colors in the preset interface.

After clicking on the color block, a color selection dialog box will pop up, and you can set the color by clicking or entering a color value (such as RGB, Hex, etc.).

Windows version

You can customize 11 toolbar colors for Windows. The Windows version simplifies the toolbar colors, 11 colors are provided by default, but 32 additional gradient colors are provided through the pop-up panel, and almost all colors can be used through the color selection panel using the More Colors button, but only 11 colors displayed directly on the toolbar are allowed to be customized.

Clicking the color will pop up the color panel, clicking
More
button will pop up the color selection dialog box, you can set the color by clicking or entering color values (such as RGB, Hex, etc.); click the
+
button at the bottom to record the current color into the historical color.

Brush Presets

When editing presets, including brush tools, colors, dimensions, effects, if set to
Not Specified
or
None
, the corresponding parameters set in real time on the toolbar are automatically applied.

Click the
+
button to add a preset brush; Click the ‘X’ button to delete all presets in the table.

**
Name
Cell: ** Click on a cell to modify the preset name.

**
Drawing Tool
Cell: ** Click on a cell to modify the brush tool used in the preset; If no brush tool is specified, use the selected brush tool on the toolbar.

**
Color
Cell: ** Click on a cell to modify the brush color used in the preset settings; Click the
X
button after the color to clear the color; If no color is specified, use the selected color on the toolbar.

**
Drawing Size
Cell: ** Click on the cell to modify the brush size used in the preset; If the brush size is not specified, use the selected brush size on the toolbar.

**
Drawing Effects
Cell: ** Click on a cell to modify the effect used in the preset, the effect can be set to one or more; if no brush effect is specified, the effect selected on the toolbar is used.

**
Shortcut Key
Cell: ** Click a cell to record a preset shortcut; in Draw mode, you can use the shortcut to apply the preset configuration to the toolbar, activating the corresponding brush tools, dimensions, colors, and effects.

Correlation of Colors and Toolbar Colors in Brush Presets

Note that the color in the brush preset is not independent, it is associated with your custom toolbar color, and when the toolbar color changes the color value, the brush color in the brush preset associated with that color will also automatically change.

However, there are exceptions for the Windows version. Because the Windows version provides not only 11 customizable toolbar colors when picking colors for the brush preset, but also an additional 32 gradient colors, which are fixed and unchangeable. When you select a color that is one of the 32 fixed colors, changing the color values of the 11 toolbar colors affects the colors in the brush preset.

The paginator is displayed along the left edge of the screen and consists of 13 components from top to bottom: drag handle, page overlay switch, page title setting button, nine page buttons, and a help button at the bottom. The help button automatically hides after the help panel is opened once. If you need to access the help panel later, click the Page Label Setting Button; there is another help button inside the settings interface.

Drag Handle

The paginator snaps to the left edge of the screen every time it appears. Drag the drag handle to move the paginator to any position. When the handle gets close to the left or right screen edge, it will automatically snap to the nearest edge.
Double-click the drag handle to collapse all other buttons; double-click again to restore them.

Nine Page Buttons

The nine page buttons correspond to nine independent pages with no mutual interference. You may draw different annotations on each page. Click these buttons to switch between pages.

Page Overlay Switch

Pages are independent by default. To display multiple pages stacked together, activate this toggle to turn it blue.
Click the page buttons you want to overlay one by one; they will turn purple to indicate they are enabled for overlay. Click again to disable overlay for the page.

Note: The last activated page button will turn dark purple, marking its corresponding page as the current drawing page. Any shapes drawn on the canvas will belong to this page.

You can switch the current drawing page by either right-clicking a page button or clicking a page button while holding the Ctrl key.

Note: When pages are overlaid, pages positioned higher in the stacking order will be covered by pages positioned lower.

Page Title Setting Button

Page buttons show numerical labels by default, which may lack intuitive meaning. Use the Page Label Setting Button to assign descriptive custom labels to each page button. Labels will be fully displayed on the buttons; it is recommended to keep labels concise.

Save Page Annotations

Right-click the canvas and select Save Page Annotations to export all graphic data from every page as a single package. You can use Load Page Annotations later to restore the saved drawings.

ePointer Usage Tips

Usage instructions for each drawing tool or feature can be accessed by clicking the question mark button next to each tool in the ePointer’s [Preferences - Shortcut Key Settings]. This section only covers some important or easily overlooked tips for using the ePointer.

ePointer Usage Tips

Hiding and Collapsing the Toolbox: The ePointer interface has only one toolbox. When you drag the toolbox to the left, top, or right edge of the screen, it will automatically hide into the screen edge. Moving the mouse over the edge where the toolbox is located will redisplay it.

Tool buttons with a black triangle ◢ in the bottom-right corner: This indicates that the button has a dropdown menu. There are generally 3 ways to open the dropdown menu of a tool:

Click the black triangle ◢ area to pop up the menu

Long-press the button to pop up the menu (not applicable to effect buttons on macOS1)

Right-click the button to pop up the menu (not applicable to effect buttons on Windows2)

Exclusive activation of effect buttons: Graphic effect buttons include Shadow 21, Stroke 21, Dashed Line 21, and Semi-Transparent 21 effects. To quickly disable other active effects and exclusively enable one of them, you can:

On Windows, right-click the effect button you want to exclusively enable.

On macOS, long-press the effect button you want to exclusively enable.

Drawing with
Shift
: Most drawing tools support
Shift
drawing. For line tools, holding
Shift
while drawing allows you to draw horizontal or vertical lines. For rectangles, ellipses, etc., it allows you to draw squares or circles.

Quick switching between sub-tools of a drawing tool: For drawing tools with multiple sub-tools, such as
Single Arrow Line
 and
Double Arrow Line
, these two tools are integrated into the same drawing tool button due to their similar shapes. After activating the button, to quickly switch between these two tools, simply press the
Tab
key back and forth.

Quickly deleting all spotlights: After drawing multiple spotlights 21, to delete all spotlights at once, simply use the eraser to click on the shaded area between the spotlights.

Using the Text tool:

On Windows, when entering text, you can use
Shift+Enter
for line breaks within the text, press
Enter
to finish text input, and press
Esc
to cancel text drawing; switch to the selection tool and double-click the text to re-edit it.

On macOS, you can use the
Return
key for line breaks and press
Esc
to finish text drawing; switch to the selection tool and double-click the text to re-edit it.

Full-screen and area screenshot: The screenshot 21 tool — click the screen for a full-screen screenshot; press and drag the mouse to draw a rectangle for an area screenshot.

Multi-selecting shapes: After switching to the
Selection Tool
, hold the
Ctrl
2 or
Command
1 key and click multiple shapes in sequence to select them all at once; another method is to use the mouse to draw a rectangular selection area to lasso-select one or more shapes. Once shapes are selected together, they can be moved, cut, deleted, etc. together.

Returning to the previous drawing tool:

On Windows, for the screenshot , icon , eraser , and selection tool , after finishing using these tools, you can press
Esc
to quickly return to the previously selected drawing tool.

On macOS, for the eraser and selection tool , after finishing using these tools, you can press
Esc
to quickly return to the previously selected drawing tool.

Temporary click-through on the canvas:

Windows: In Classic Mode or Dynamic Mode (Frozen Mode not supported), you can hold the shortcut key
Ctrl+Alt
(default) to temporarily toggle the click-through function on or off. When click-through is enabled, users can interact with third-party software beneath the canvas using the mouse. Note that
Ctrl+Alt
may also be a shortcut key in that third-party software, which could cause execution conflicts. Therefore, it is recommended to use the
F5
key (default) to toggle click-through on or off (this feature can be found in the dropdown list of the Start button in the upper-right corner of the toolbar), which does not require holding a shortcut key.

macOS: Similar to the Windows version, in Classic Mode or Dynamic Mode (Frozen Mode not supported), the
Fn
key is used by default to temporarily toggle the click-through function on or off. If using a third-party keyboard without an
Fn
key or if the key cannot be detected, you can set an alternative key in [Preferences - Shortcut Key Settings - Temporary Click-Through Toggle]. Similarly, if the
Fn
key is unavailable, it is recommended to use the
F5
function instead of setting an alternative shortcut key.

Using the Paginator:

The paginator needs to be activated before entering drawing mode: First activate the paginator switch on the toolbar; after entering drawing mode, the paginator will appear at the left edge of the screen.

Paginator drag handle: The paginator drag handle can collapse and expand the buttons by double-clicking; dragging and dropping the paginator to the left, top, or right edge of the screen will cause the paginator to snap to the screen edge.

Changing the current page: After enabling the overlay mode of the paginator, right-click or Ctrl-click an overlay page button to set it as the current page. The current page determines which page subsequent annotations on the canvas belong to. Once the current page is confirmed, all newly drawn annotation shapes will be saved to the data file of this current page.

Icon Panel Pagination (Page Navigation): In the Windows version, when many custom icons are added to the ePointer and cannot be fully displayed in the icon panel at once, place the mouse cursor over the icon panel and scroll the mouse wheel to navigate pages.

Saving or exporting annotation data:

After entering drawing mode, if the paginator is not enabled, right-click the canvas and select
Save Annotations
to temporarily save the annotation shapes on the canvas; use
Load Annotations
next time to re-read and load them onto the canvas.

If the paginator is enabled, right-click the canvas and select
Save Paginator Annotations
to package all shape data from all pages of the canvas into a compressed file and save it to a location of your choice. Next time, you can use the
Load Paginator Annotations
command to reload them. However, note that reloading paginated annotations will overwrite existing paginated annotation data. If there are important annotations in the current data, it is recommended to package and export a backup first.
